The Parts Within

We all are human. During the formative years of our childhoods, we start learning which parts of us work better in most situations. For example, in class while answering a tough question and putting up with classmates teasing, the tough and brave part would show up more.

When feeling sad and confused, the sensitive part will show up. But along with the sensitive part, our angry and vindictive part will also show up, sometimes trumping the sensitive one.

It’s never easy to choose to see all those parts, especially the ugly, rude, nasty and shameful ones. Maybe if we learnt to understand why they showed up, we’ll get to see how they protected us in their own ways. Of course it’s hard to know them, especially when shame, guilt, embarrassment or something else deeply uncomfortable is associated with them.

Yet for the same reasons that we avoid them, we should learn to accept them for a change.

By showing all parts of us the same respect, honour and consideration, I believe we would become much better and wholesome versions of ourselves, because as Dr Richard Schwartz says, ‘There are no bad parts.’
